A warm mist humidifier is a device that produces a sustained mist of warm water vapor in a larger small area, depending on the device. These are almost entirely electrically powered, with a few weaker battery models available, though most are corded electric. These devices serve a host of purposes, one of them being medical.

What is the best warm mist humidifier? These devices can be divided into steam humidifiers/vaporizers and ultrasonic humidifiers. Steam humidifiers boil water to release warm mist into the air. They are equipped with a heating element, a reservoir, and a nozzle. In addition, vaporizers have a dispenser that allows you to use the device with liquid inhalants.

Ultrasonic humidifiers create a warm mist through the built-in diaphragm that vibrates at a certain frequency. They are more versatile and can emit not only warm mist or cool mist but also both of them. Apart from that, some humidifiers are made with a filter while others come filter-free like the Honeywell Top Fill. The advantage of the latter option is low maintenance as you do not need to replace filters.

If you need a humidifier for large areas — from 1.000 sq. ft. and up — you should buy a more powerful model like the Aprilaire Model 865 and Aprilaire Model 700 whole-home humidifiers covering 6,200 and 4,200 square feet, respectively.

Types of Warm Mist Humidifiers & How They Work

They can be used to combat severe congestion, respiratory issues, and other such things, which is one of their heaviest uses, but they can also be used to aid people who suffer from ailments due to dry, cold air. Many people who first moved to desert areas, or the dryer, colder Pacific Northwestern areas will often seek comfort in a warm mist humidifier to acclimate themselves.

Larger, industrial warmness humidifiers are also used for hydroponic and greenhouse agriculture, providing a stable, moist and warm environment regardless of the climate outside.

Precautions. Warmness humidifiers should not be used by people with chronic bronchitis, as severe humidity can actually agitate this ailment. It also probably shouldn’t be used as an alleviation method for people suffering from lung cancer, or rheumatoid arthritis, as severe humidity can also agitate these. These should not be used around electronics, as condensation can and will ruin the internal mechanisms.

The two most popular warm mist humidifiers are Levoit and Honeywell brands. Both devices are filter-free, which is a clear advantage. The problem with filters is that bacteria and microbes accumulate on them. Moreover, using a filter-free device, you do not have to bother with replacing filters. Vicks and Honeywell humidifiers come with a one-gallon water tank, medicine cups, and two output settings (low and high). Besides, they have a feature that turns off the unit automatically when it is empty.

The Honeywell model has one more beneficial feature — a reset light indicator that tells you when to fill the tank. Also, this option is longer-lasting and can operate for up to 24 hours, whereas the Vicks humidifier runs for no more than 12 hours per filling. And finally, the Honeywell humidifier is more compact (11 x 13 inches) and lightweight (4 pounds) than the Vicks model.

Honeywell also offers a cool-mist humidifier as an alternative for those who cannot use warm mist models. It costs twice as much and uses evaporative technology. This device is germ-free and kills almost all bacteria in the room. Unlike the above-mentioned humidifiers, this one is equipped with a wicking filter.

Whole-home Humidifiers

If you need a humidifier for large areas — from 1.000 sq. ft. and up — you should buy a more powerful model such as humidifiers by Aprilaire. This is a trustworthy brand that has been producing award-winning humidifiers, dehumidifiers, airs purifiers, and thermostats for decades. By the way, it was Aprilaire that created the first whole-home humidifier.

The two most popular products from this company include the Aprilaire Model 865 and Aprilaire Model 700 whole-home humidifiers covering 6,200 and 4,200 square feet, respectively. Both models are equipped with dual sensors to monitor not only indoor humidity but also outdoor temperature. That is why Aprilaire humidifiers add the right amount of moisture to your home’s air. Easy to install and use, these humidifiers are fully automatic and come with a controller.

Vincent Smith, engineer: We turned Aprilaire Steam Humidifier Model 800 on a week ago. The first hour that we had it on it brought the humidity up inside the house from 33 percent to 44 in about an hour. It's been working perfectly. As far as what noise it makes in the garage you hear the clicks of the phil solenoid and the drain solenoid cutting on and off. Not loud. I mean it's just a little quick but I got to tell you the sound of the boiling water inside the canister is actually a very soothing noise.

The one I've installed here is the model 800 where the steam pipe goes into your furnace ductwork. The Aprilaire does make a model 865 that has what it calls a fan unit that you mount into a wall inside your house somewhere and you run the steam pipe to it and it has the steam manifold inside that little unit in the wall and a fan that blows the steam out into the house. Now that works great if say your house has baseboard heat or some type of heat where you don't have duct work then that's your option. The downside of that is all the humidity is being applied to the house or being injected into the house in one location instead of from every vent in the house. But it's an option there for you if you have that type of heating system. In the end we are very satisfied with this unit. If you need a humidifier even if your furnace is in the basement and you don't have the concern with the water line freezing up in the attic I would go with this unit.

Two houses ago I had a house that had a humidifier on the ductwork in the basement of the house and it was one of those ones that had the the sponges that wick the water up and it blows the air across them the downside of those. And what I really don't like about them is there's a reservoir of water in there that stays full all the time. You've got those sponges or the rotating discs or whatever you've got that stay wet all the time. It's going to be full of mold and mildew and crawdads and bass and whatever else grows inside of something like that. Because think about it it's in a nice heated environment. So I would recommend this because the only reservoir is the the canister inside that unit and guess what it's heated up to boiling several times a day so anything that's in there is going to get killed all through that process. I would venture to say this is much more hygienic than any other kind of humidifier you can mount into your furnace. So very happy with it. Recommend it for that.

Harli G: " Personally I have two of these Levoit LV 600 humidifiers in my house. The first thing I really like about this one is that you can change the humidity you want your house to be kept at. If the humidity drops below that percentage then your humidifier is automatically going to kick on and run until it reads that the room is that humidity. Another feature I really really like is that there is a cool a warm and then a warmer mist settings. The warmer the mist the quicker it works to up that percentage of humidity in the air. I personally prefer to keep it on the warm mist setting. My plants seem to especially love the warm mist as opposed to the coolness. Recently we ran it off literally all night long until it was like 75% in here on the warm mist and I have never slept better in my life. That warm mist works wonders. My skin loves it too.

And then the other feature I really really love that drew me specifically to this humidifier is the fact that it has a six liter tank. I didn't want a humidifier where I was going to have to be filling it up every single day. If you run it at the one setting which is what I prefer to do you can run your humidifier for 36 hours straight before the tank will run out of water. Now on the one setting the warmest and then keeping it between 50 to 55 percent humidity I am having to change the tank maybe once every week week-and-a-half ish. It has this little piece on the top which is where the mist comes out of top of. it actually has two nozzles that rotate 360. I love this feature this isn't really something I paid attention to while I was deciding which humidifier I wanted. Now that I have it I don't think I would ever get a humidifier that doesn't have something like this. So you can if you want the stream to be turned in one direction focusing it on say a certain section of plants you can turn them both one way or you can turn them opposite ways so some mist is going to one side of the room and some mist is going to the other. That's really handy. It just pops right into place.

Another thing I really like especially because I do keep one of these in my bedroom right now I really like the fact that you can hold down the auto button for three seconds and it'll turn off the display. The first few nights I didn't know about that setting and the blue light was kind of bothering me but now that solves the problem. Another nice thing is they do come with remote controls. So if I decide I want to change a setting on my humidifier in the middle of the night I can go ahead and just not have to get out of bed. I can just run it with this remote which is really awesome. Makes it super easy. I do highly highly recommend it. I personally think it's really really worth the money even though it is a bit more pricey than your typical humidifiers. But especially for us houseplant enthusiasts who collect uncommon houseplants and rare houseplants or just once in general that we want to be extremely happy it is for sure worth spending the money in my opinion."
