Airbrushing is not possible without an adequate air supply. And here, even a novice artist or a modelist realizes the necessity in an air compressor. However, various airbrushes come with different pressure requirements. Thus, if you’ve already purchased such a tool, special attention should be paid to its compatibility with a certain type of compressor. In this article, we will review all important features of airbrush compressors, thus helping you to make the right choice.

What is the best airbrush compressor? Oil-free piston air compressors with an air tank are the most popular options among many artists, as they cover the entire range of the requirements to the advanced models. Such compressors are compatible with the majority of airbrush types to tackle light- and heavy-duty paint spraying projects. Besides, they will not create any discomfort for a user in terms of noise, as they run comparatively quietly. Tank availability allows pressurizing and storing larger amount of air without the necessity of its bleeding. Accordingly, they feature higher pressure output capacity and longer service life in comparison with their tankless counterparts.

If you are focusing on air compressors suitable for airbrushing applications, then you primarily pay attention to diaphragm- and reciprocating piston-type units which in their turn belong to a positive-displacement group.

Diaphragm compressors pressurize air inside a chamber with the help of a flexible membrane which is moved forward and backward by a rod and a crankshaft mechanism. Conventional membranes are made of rubber or a rubberized material. Currently, some modern compressors come with plastic membranes. Reasonable prices and compactness are the obvious advantages of diaphragm air compressors. However, they have plenty of downsides like lower air output, shorter runtime, and relatively high noise level in comparison with reciprocating piston models. These compressors would become an ideal choice when working with various airbrushes and relating attachments.

Reciprocating piston air compressors, like the MASTER AIRBRUSH COOL RUNNER II AIR COMPRESSOR, are the most common and preferable type among airbrushing amateurs and professionals in various fields of application. It is one of the oldest types of air compressors, thus the upgraded modern models demonstrate sufficient reliability with a positive displacement functioning. With the help of the integrated pistons the ambient air is pumped and compressed in a chamber.

Some models come in a dual-piston design which contributes to higher air flow and/or pressure. Thus, such units are used for larger pneumatic tools and equipment. Also, piston-type compressors are offered in oil and oil-free designs. The latter runs without any lubrication due to usage of materials with low friction factor. Thus, its maintenance is much easier, and weight is a bit lower than its oil-based counterpart. Nevertheless, higher risks of overheating and shorter runtime are the apparent flipsides of such units. On the contrary, oil compressors minimize the risk of overheating and enhance sealing of moving parts.

Features to be considered when looking for an airbrush compressor | Buyers’ Guide

Max. Pressure. The experience of many artists and modelists shows that the minimum pressure, sufficient for working with liquid paints, amounts to 15 PSI (pounds per square inch). However, it would be unreasonable to choose a mini compressor with such pressure rate for airbrushing. Such unit will have to run continuously with few breaks in-between. Thus, such operating mode may cause its damage and multiple failures during its work. Which is why, it is recommended to choose a compressor capable of delivering on average 50 PSI – 87 PSI. In this guide we review the POWER JET PRO DOUBLE PISTON PROFESSIONAL AIR COMPRESSOR from IWATA which is capable of generating up to 70 PSI.

Air flow. This parameter along with a pressure rate determines the overall capacity of an air compressor. The air volume created by a compressor is measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute). Different airbrushes feature certain air flow rates necessary for the efficient work. However, the majority of portable airbrush compressors are capable of delivering from 0.70 CFM up to 1.76 CFM of air. If you have no possibility to get a specific airbrushing model, try more powerful options. Do not be afraid of its capacity, as it can be adjusted by means of appropriate integrated fixtures mentioned below.

Pressure regulator. Adjustment of pressure level is the main function of this unit. It can be a useful attachment which allows attaining an extra efficient running of the system. A regulator creates optimal air pressure/flow settings. In case of an excessive output of a compressor and tank capacity, pressurized air volume will allow efficient working with an airbrush for a long time.

Water/oil trap filter. This item will be a highly useful accessory to a compressor which prevents condensate or oil penetration into an airbrush. Water or oil drops inside an air hose and airbrush might spoil your artwork. Thus, you should think of such protection beforehand.

Noise level. This feature is the key factor for the majority of customers. Even those who need higher performance characteristics would prefer to purchase quieter options meeting certain requirements. Some modern airbrush compressors run at 47 dB only making them almost silent options in comparison with other counterparts in the class with their 55 – 65 dB. However, quiet options are commonly much pricier than their noisy competitors. The MASTER AIRBRUSH COOL RUNNER II DUAL FAN AIR COMPRESSOR is a very quiet unit with its 47 Db only.

Duty cycle. This parameter determines capability of your compressor in terms of running duration. However, here you should consider the capacity of a compressor tank. Air volume stored in the tank allows the compressor recovering which contributes to an extended service life. Often, duty cycle is determined in percentage from a particular period of time. For instance, 50% duty cycle means 30 minutes of a continuous operation of a compressor before a 30-minute break till the next startup. Overall, you should estimate the scope of your work before choosing a particular duty-cycle option.

When do you need an airbrush compressor with a tank?

Such combination has several advantages improving airbrushing efficiency. Tank is used as a storage place for compressed air. Compressor supplies the air to a tool through a tank. The latter allows maintaining steady air flow and saving electricity; that is, the compressor stops pressurizing the air as soon as the tank is full. In case of blackouts air volume stored in the tank will allow completing your work. It is recommended to purchase a compressor with a tank factory-assembled like the ZENY PRO 1/5 HP AIRBRUSH AIR COMPRESSOR AIRBRUSHING KIT WITH 3L TANK; as such combination would be fully compatible with each other. Otherwise, a tank purchased separately from a compressor has to withstand pressure which considerably exceeds the maximum pressure generated by a compressor.

With all benefits of a compressor-tank tandem, its weight will be considerably heavier than that of a compressor only. Besides, its cost will definitely be higher.

Safety Rules & Tips | Airbrush Spray Booth

Most probably each artist or any person who has tried once painting with the help of an airbrush, they experienced unpleasant impressions from overspray and solvent clouds around. It can be deemed as one of the most critical health issues about airbrush practice. Some of the reasonable solutions from this situation would be paint spraying in a well-ventilated place, usage of protective gears preventing risk of inhaling of any overspray content, or usage of nontoxic painting materials only (like acrylic colors).

However, unfortunately these conditions could not be always met. In this case, an airbrush spray booth like the Master Airbrush Spray Booth would be an ideal wayout. It is comparatively compact chamber equipped with a high-performance extracting fan, to remove overspray and fumes from an airbrush, operator, and other items in a close vicinity. Besides, such items feature bright lightning to improve visibility of a model and the entire working area, replaceable filters, and extension hoses to draw fumes outside.

However, you should not think that an airbrush paint booth can be a substitution to a respirator! Please, be aware of this fact, and behave accordingly. Besides, it would hardly remove all painty smells. So, consider this device as an advanced accessory to your airbrush system designed to improve your working conditions.

Testing & Customers Reviews

We found reviews from real YouTube bloggers about the products from our article.

Airbrush Asylum: "This particular compressor, Iwata IS975, we have decided to use now in our classes so we've just ordered in half a dozen of these. It's nice and powerful hence the power jet. And the beauty of this model and the reason why we picked it for our students is it's got two quick connects. And the best thing about it is the dual rigs. So we can have one student basically controlling the air pressure for their airbrush while the other one sets it to their desired PSI.

It's not overly noisy. Doesn't make a lot of movement which is good. If you like I said airbrushing with two air brushes at the same time then this compressor is definitely the one to go for. It's basically got enough power so that you're not going to lose any power while you're airbrushing. Which is great. So both people can airbrush comfortably but it's not going to shut itself off.

A lot of people will get a smaller compressor thinking oh it's so good it's compact but especially a diaphragm compressor is a problem. The reason being is what diaphragm compressors do is that they pulsate the air so to fill up their tank. Or a lot of the time they don't have a tank at all. So just to run the compressor it it basically pulsates. And there's even some smaller motor compressors that sort of operate almost like a fish tank motor. It's just not going to give you a perfect nice smooth line. That's the beauty of the water compressors. They are basically setup for it obviously. So you know you get your moisture trap built in in this case. You've got dual moisture traps which is great. You've also got the little holder which is handy for all the air brushes without a Mac valve. And it also will give your consistent paint flow. They're oil free and basically maintenance free. The one thing that I don't like is the fact that they give you these coiled hoses."

The Airbrush Garage: Master Airbrush has a lot of products that are are good products and they're reasonably priced. Maybe not the compressor that you need to go full time and and be professional airbrush all day.

You won't hear this motor running every time you press the trigger on your airbrush. It'll run when it gets down to a certain volume of air. It will kick back on refill your tank. With this one I find even on the most humid days I don't get very much water in my trap. So my recommendation is get a compressor like this and you won't have any water problems. At least very minimal. Even if you have a cheap compressor as long as you set it up correctly you will have much success.

This compressor says it's good for two airbrushes I've never tried it but I'm sure it can handle it. I also like to use Master Airbrush hoses. I think they're really good. I don't find any air leaks with them.
