What is the best inverter generator? To begin with, you should opt for a model manufactured by a trusted brand. Petrol generators differ by the engine’s power output, the size of the fuel tank, and overall run time.

Trusted Manufacturers

One of the most trustworthy brands is Briggs & Stratton Corporation, an American manufacturer of gasoline engines. The company offers 8 models with running watts ranging from 900 to 7,000 and runtime up to 7 hours and 24 min.

Some models are made with sturdier frames than others. This is important because the frame is where a generator is housed. Well-built frames reduce vibrations and noise and protect the unit from bumps.

Best Standby Generator for Home Use

Böhmer-AG, a globally recognized generator manufacturer, offers six models for camping, home, and commercial needs with an output from 1,700 to 8,000 watts.

The product range of Hyundai, a well-known South Korean automotive manufacturer, includes as many as 20 petrol generators for every budget. You can choose a multi-purpose open-frame petrol generator for under £400 or an ultra-powerful 6.6 kW model for £1,600 that can easily power fridges and heaters.

The Hyundai HY3200SEi 3.2kW features a powerful 4-stroke 210cc petrol engine and can simultaneously power multiple devices. Ideal for camping and other outdoor events, this petrol generator is compact and portable. With a weight of 35 kg, it is made with rear wheels and a front handle for easy transportation. The device offers a max output of 3200W and a fuel tank capacity of 7.8 litres. The Eco mode allows you to reduce fuel consumption and noise.

What is the best portable inverter generator? The modern portable inverter generators can power any sophisticated electronics like computers, smartphones, and medical and lab equipment with no fear of their damage. Besides, an inverter unit can provide a continuous running of the connected consumers using an accurate, current flow setting. Thus, any peaks or interference are excluded.

All types of inverter generators are equipped with a particular system reducing the number of hazardous emissions, a sound-proof enclosure, and always come in a compact design with ergonomic handles and wheels, thus enhancing their mobility. More than that, fuel consumption efficiency is always ensured due to an electronic adjustment of engine operation. In particular, Briggs & Stratton offers these and many other advantages being one of the state-of-the-art generators of modern inverter technology.

Key Features | How Inverter Generators Differ

  • Tank capacity. The inverter generators belong to the class of compact and portable equipment. Thus, they have a smaller tank capacity than traditional generators, mainly stationary or industrial-grade equipment. However, if you focus on a portable generator that can be taken with you to some remote locations or while camping, then try to choose the unit with an enormous fuel tank. But don’t forget that the bigger the tank is, the bigger its size and weight will be.
  • Power. It is one of the most important parameters determining how much power your generator can produce. Before making the final decision regarding purchasing a particular model, you should roughly estimate the power consumption where you will operate your generator. 2000W-3000W would be enough to cover the power needs of an average household. If you are going to energize continuously only your gadgets, a compact 1kW generator will fit. However, it’s better to choose a station with a specific reserve capacity. In this case, you can use such a unit in the countryside as its capacity will be enough to ensure the desired comfort.

  • Fuel type is one of the most important questions you should answer before picking any generator. If you need more versatility, look for a dual-power fuel generator. It is just perfect for delivering electricity whenever and wherever you need it. It gives you more flexibility and versatility, thus enabling you to choose which of the fuel more fits your needs under particular circumstances. A good example is Hyundai 3.2kW Dual-Fuel Petrol + LPG Gas Generator with a powerful 223cc/7.5hp 4-Stroke engine. Despite the weight (47kg), it is very maneuverable and easy to carry, thanks to the built-in wheels.

  • Continuous work. This characteristic determines the maximum continuous runtime of a generator before fuel refilling. This value will directly depend on a size of a fuel tank and load intensity. The more consumers will be connected, the higher fuel consumption will be. Thus, the time before further refilling will be reduced accordingly. On average, compact portable inverter generators can be operated during 1-8 hours which will be enough in case of a sudden power outage or outdoor usage.

“There is a distinct difference between the newer inverter type of generators and conventional generators. The inverter types come at a significant price increase, though the salespeople will tell you that they also come with a lot of advantages. The question is what kind of real advantages can you expect and whether it is worth spending your money on them. Conventional generators typically consist of an internal combustion engine that is driven by whichever kind of fuel source and the actual electrical generator. The result of the two components, still being kind of separate, is that the whole unit together can be relatively heavy or bulky. Now, let's look at an inverter generator. The basic layout is somewhat similar to the conventional type, but instead of heaving a separate engine and a separate electrical generator, they combine it into one unit. The obvious result of this is that the overall weight of the unit can be drastically reduced. The inverter generator takes the AC power being produced, breaks it down to the DC power and then through the inverter builts it up to AC power again. Therefore, your output is very controlled, very stable, a perfect sinus waveform and high-quality electricity”.

Testing & Customer Review

Here is a review from a YouTube blogger about the product from our article.

Harrison Hobbies: "This unit is going to be first off quite a bit louder than the smaller generators. If you're running Briggs & Stratton P2400 at 2 AM and you're trying to run, you know, a 2000-watt heater or something, you're going to make your neighbors mad. At idle, you're gonna have no problem. If you're trying to run your fridges overnight and, you know, keep your phones charged and a TV on, this thing's quiet enough, but under heavy load, it gets a lot louder. I guess the opposite end of that coin is the fact that it is putting out a lot more wattage. At sustained, this thing is going to be able to do double what some of those like smaller Generac's will be able to do.

The other thing that we noticed whenever we were looking at the oscilloscope here was that your frequency, your 60 hertz, is locked in, and so regardless of what the voltage is, regardless of your amplitude there, your frequency is maintained. That's going to be good for your inductive loads of things like motors and stuff that really want that 60 hertz. We also have a drip tray for oil, and this is actually one of the best ones that I've seen. I absolutely love this. This is the first company that's actually done anything right with this. So when you screw up with an oil which I have done on literally every generator I've got, that is going to be a super awesome feature."

yougestube: "Received my Böhmer-AG gasoline generator W6500e, as it says on the box. This is bought as a potential backup for the house in case of any issues, any power outages.

Let you just start unpacking it. It's rated at 2800 watts, which i think is just enough to run some lights the key one being the refrigerator, maybe the microwave from time to time. But that's the thought just in case of backup it's just kind of a little bit of an insurance policy.

Okay, like everything seems to be present and accounted. This is the battery for the electric start, there is a backup pool start, of course and of course i need to fill it with oil before i do anything. I i've put it onto a trolley, just to make it easy to move it around. It is reasonably heavy, i mean, i'm a fully chunky guy and i could pick it up okay. But if you know a lady or somebody that may not be able to pack it by themselves, so, it's, i thought, a good idea to put onto the trolley. So, i can move it around quite easily.

Okay, well good news - it's all started no problems whatsoever, literally first turn it started. So, pretty happy about that.

I wouldn't mind getting a hold of the decibel meter. I think i might have one on my phone. So, i'll connect one up and see if i can do some measurements on the on the decibels. Okay, otherwise all good, okay, just for the sound. I'm about 10 meters away, when i walked up. So, working got a tv connected up, you know, essential items. There's an old fridge here on top of that, which i'll i'll connect up as well make sure it's working. You might hear the generator give it a little bit of noisier than i had anticipated. It's not quiet as you can hear. That's actually quite loud."

What things should be considered when selecting an inverter generator

Fuel type. It is one of the most important questions you should answer before picking any generator. But don’t be under a delusion that you can feed it at your discretion. In particular, filling a tank with diesel instead of the intended gasoline and vice versa is not permissible. These two fuel options have particularities, so let’s consider them individually.

  • If you focus on a gasoline generator, bear in mind that it is designed only for some small jobs. The gas-powered units are less reliable than their diesel counterparts. Also, they produce less power. Nevertheless, they weigh less and can be operated at low temperatures.  Besides, gasoline generators require little maintenance and cost less than diesel generators.
  • If you’ve decided to purchase a diesel generator, then you should realize that such a unit is a reliable and long-lasting power supplier. As you’ve probably understood, the diesel generator runs on diesel fuel. Its efficiency is considerably higher in comparison with its gasoline counterpart. The power delivered using the diesel unit is distinguished by a short payback period due to its fuel-saving features. However, these machines are more preferable for some professional- and industrial-grade applications.
  • The propane generators do not significantly differ from the gasoline or diesel units. They consist of a power frame, protective cover and a control panel. Also, they are equipped with a generator unit and an internal combustion engine. The only distinctive feature of a propane generator from liquid-fuel devices is the absence of a fuel tank. On the contrary, such a power source is stored in cylinders or bottles which is connected to the unit by means of a hose. Propane is considered to be a clean fuel, and the usage of for the generation of an alternating current is the most eco-friendly method, as the amount of hazardous emissions is considerably lower than that of the gasoline or diesel models. Besides, propane inverter generators are very convenient in operation, that is, almost no maintenance is required. More than that, you will have no troubles with delivery or storage of this type of fuel, thus cylinders can be easily purchased at numerous stores or merchandise centers, or changed or refilled at the numerous refilling stations.
  • A dual fuel generator is a gasoline unit that can also run on propane. Such generators represent an optimal combination of the gasoline model's reliability and convenience and the propane running option's affordability and eco-friendliness. The dual power fuel generator is perfect for delivering electricity whenever and wherever you need it. Such a device gives you more flexibility and versatility due to this advanced dual fuel option, thus enabling you to choose which fuel more fits your needs under particular circumstances.

Motor type.  The inverter generators are equipped with internal combustion engines similar to those in cars. The power is generated due to fuel combustion, and then it is converted into mechanical energy, which activates the generator to produce a current flow. However, different types of engines operate differently.

  • 2-stroke engines are also called 2-cycle engines. That is, during the revolution of a crankshaft of the first intake stroke, fuel injection with further compression in a cylinder occurs. Ignition of the compressed gas mixture takes place during the second stroke. As a result, pressure and temperature are getting increased. Gas expansion activates a piston. Then a gas exhausting and scavenging systems come into operation. Compactness is the main advantage of the 2-stroke engine as there is neither a valve system nor a countershaft. However, the operation of this type of engine requires sophisticated pre-mixing. Thus, you should strictly observe a particular proportion of oil and fuel added.
  • The main operating processes of the 4-cycle engine require 4 strokes. Initially, fuel injection occurs with its further compression and rising of its temperature. Then the combustion and expansion occur, that is, the fuel is mixed with further ignition and expansion, thus pushing the piston. Unlike the 2-stroke engine, the 4-cycle engines are equipped with a simple exhausting system, and their exhaust emissions are less hazardous.

Overall, these two types have several pros and cons. Thus, the 2-stroke engines are very compact and have a much simpler design. However, these engines are suitable for less powerful generators (up to 1000 W). More powerful machines use the 4-stroke engines, which, despite their heavy weight, are more convenient in operation as they do not require any premixing procedures due to the availability of a separate compartment for the oil. Besides, these engines are quieter in operation, more durable, and more efficient.

A number of phases. Nowadays, inverter generators are offered with single- and three-phase systems. The single-phase voltage can be generated via two wires - the conductor and the neutral, namely. The current flows through the conductor, while the neutral serves as a return way of the current. The single-phase units are designed for running devices and equipment which require 110-240V. I mean those home appliances and tools which are always within reach on an everyday basis like electric kettles, TV sets, microwave ovens, etc.

  • The three-phase system consists of four wires, three conductors and one neutral. A three-phase circuit can also power single-phase consumers connected to any of the three phases and neutral. But the consumption per phase should be approximately equal; otherwise, a voltage imbalance may occur.  The three-phase power supply system can generate power for larger applications, like industrial facilities, factories, or just for equipment that runs up to 480V. Nevertheless, powerful devices are gradually becoming more and more popular among the average householders. Thus, a three-phase generator would also be suitable for domestic purposes, as well. But still, such generators are most commonly used for enabling powerful machines and tools on various industrial sites.

Cooling type. Nowadays, the manufacturers of generators offer two main types of motor cooling: air and liquid systems. Each of them has its particularities, advantages and downsides. As a rule, an air cooling system is mainly used for domestic generators. These AC models are capable of generating up to 5kW. Due to their technical peculiarities, the air-cooled generators are limited in terms of the runtime. They have to be stopped each 2-4 hours till the complete cooldown of an engine.

A liquid cooling system is more advantageous for many reasons; in particular, due to the ability to eliminate a bigger amount of heat, they can provide a long-lasting continuous operation of the equipment. Besides, this type of generator cooling contributes to the reduction of a noise load.

Fuel consumption. There are a lot of parameters that influence on the fuel consumption rate like pressure, air content, humidity, and ambient temperature. Thus, to improve the efficiency of your generator, you should operate the unit under optimal weather conditions, take care of regular maintenance, purchase high-quality fuel, and monitor the operating load of your generator which should be within 40-80% range. Besides, the efficiency of a generator depends on a motor type. It is clear that the fuel consumption of a diesel generator will be considerably lower in comparison with a gasoline model. Thus, if you need a small power generator that will be used as a reserve power supply, then a gasoline option will be a clear choice.

In case of frequent and extended use of a generator, a diesel-powered unit will be preferable. Diesel generators consume less fuel and are designed for powering equipment and tools of 10kW and higher, although diesel generators with lower capacity are currently available on the market.

As I’ve already mentioned before, propane generators are the most environmentally friendly units among other gasoline and diesel counterparts. Propane is burnt more quickly. For instance, a 20 kW unit will consume about 3.44 gallons per hour, and a 35 kW unit will burn around 6.1 gallons per hour. And as the propane bottle capacity is quite low, thus it will be enough only for a day's use or even less. Thus, the owners of a propane generator recommend having at least two or even three reserve cylinders in case of being off the grid for quite a long.

Starting. This characteristic is essential if you want to ensure the convenience of the starting process of your generator.  And here you will have two options, whether to prefer a mechanical (manual) or electric-based option. Manual starters are widely used due to their simplicity and reliability. Electrical starters will facilitate the work with a generator, make it comfortable, and, if necessary, turn it into a fully automatic mode. For instance, it would be possible to set your generator for an automatic starting in case of a power cut-off. Thus no manual operations are required. Similarly, the generator will be switched off after the power supply is restored.

How Inverter Generators Work

The modern pace of living doesn’t accept any delays or hitches, which can lead to unpredictable consequences. Thus, it is hard to imagine what homeowners, storekeepers, and business owners might feel when the entire streets or cities lose power for a comparatively long time. A clear example of this can be a large-scale accident that took place in the U.S in 2003 when several states with millions of people suffered from a power outage, known as the Northeast blackout. The work of underground, elevators, computers, alarm and air conditioning systems was interrupted. Life in the big cities was nearly “dead”, people were in a panic, and the total damages amounted to many billions of dollars. The residents who had portable generators were luckier in that case. Using those units, they could have their houses lighted and heated. Besides, the freshness of products was ensured in the stores, and personal safety was maintained.

Nowadays, the generators are offered in an upgraded version called as an inverter generator or station. The latter is a compact unit that generates high-quality electricity optimally converted to voltage without surges. The inverter generators are used for powering electronics and sensitive equipment when the central power supply is cut off. Such units can also be recommended as a reserve generator for both countryside homes and traveling or some minor renovation jobs.

Fishermen, hunters, and travelers prefer to have generators at hand because these devices are compact, quiet, and convenient.  Overall, there are a lot of spheres where inverter generators would be highly desirable. So, let’s find out about the feature and operation concepts of the generators, the main types, and the differences between them. We have a lot of things to review, so let's dive right in.

FAQ?

What is a portable inverter generator?
An inverter generator is a power station that is able to produce a pure alternating current. An inverter technology contributes to weight and size reduction thus making such units portable. More than that, the inverter system turns a generator into a variable-frequency machine, with simultaneous fuel consumption and noise level reduction. In spite of the numerous advantages, the inverter generator is less powerful than a traditional unit designed as a reserve power supply in case of blackouts or similar.

How does a portable inverter generator work?
The principle of operation of the inverter generators is similar to the conventional generators with one distinctive difference. The generated energy is transferred from an engine to the shaft of a rotor which creates an alternating current. The traditional station transfers the current directly to the output, while the inverter technology has a frequency converter that transforms the alternating to direct current and back. This process ensures the stability of such parameters like voltage and intensity, thus excluding unpredictable surges.

What is the difference between a portable generator and an inverter?
A portable inverter generator is suitable for energizing sensitive electronics along with standard power equipment, tools and appliances.  Such generators demonstrate the suitability of the frequency and voltage, lower weight and noise level and higher efficiency. The downside of the inverter technology is the inability to generate more than 6kW output. Thus, unfortunately, you will not be able to plug powerful equipment or several gluttony-for-power consumers. For this reason, a stationary or a conventional portable generator will meet your needs.
