What is a USB Fingerprint Reader? A USB fingerprint reader is a biometric security device. These plug in through USB thus making them work on most modern devices with “host” configuration for their USB controller. These are commonly used as an additional bit of security either for cryptography or as a pretty hack-proof lock to keep unwelcome users or thieves from accessing your files.

These are also compatible with some IOT setups for doors and networks, adding an extra layer of security that can’t easily be tampered.

USB fingerprint readers work by one of two principles – optical or capacitive, optical being slower but much more accurate. With optical, it scans the fingerprint, and uses a high-contrast postprocessing filter and optical recognition chip to identify the fingerprint. This does take a few seconds, and it can be temperamental from time to time.

Capacitive uses a high-resolution capacitive lattice to feel every bit of the surface a lightly-pressed finger actually contacts with the skin. This is less accurate, and is much more temperamental, but is faster when it does work, and has become the cheaper option due to not needing costly optical recognition logic.
